Occupying land crisscrossed by ancient invasion paths, Pakistan was the home of the prehistoric Indus Valley civilization, which flourished until overrun by Aryans c. 1500 b.c. After being conquered by numerous rulers and powers, it passed to the British as part of India and became a separate Moslem state in 1947. The country originally included what is now Bangladesh, which declared its independence in 1971. Islamabad is the capital and Karachi the largest city. Population, 83,782,000.

Pakistan Day will be celebrated on Sunday in a befitting manner with active participation of people across the country.

March 23 is celebrated for its historic international, regional and national significance as on this day in 1940 Muslims of the sub-continent passed a resolution under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam for the establishment of a separate homeland.

The day will dawn with the firing of a 31-gun salute at sunrise in Rawalpindi and 21-gun salutes in all provincial capitals. An important event on the day will be hoisting of Pakistan flag on principal government and private buildings and Pakistan missions abroad. The Pakistani community will be invited to flag hoisting ceremonies. Thanksgiving prayers will be offered at all places of worship.

Other events marking the day will include rallies of girl guides, boy scouts and students. Cinema houses will show relevant documentary films to school children and the public at large. Special programmes will be broadcast and telecast by all radio and TV stations of Pakistan. Well-known workers of Tehrik-i-Pakistan will be invited to participate in these programmes.

An investiture ceremony will also be held. Receptions will be hosted by provincial governors and chief ministers at all the provincial capitals. Mushairas will also be held at provincial capitals. Sweets will be distributed at orphanages and Darul Amans throughout the country and prisoners will be served with special meals.

Special exhibition of photographs and documents relating to Pakistan Movement will be arranged at provincial capitals. Qira'at contests, debates and essay competitions will be organised all over the country and prizes will be awarded to winners.
